History
While the exact origin of the hammock is unknown, it is widely believed that the hammock was born out of necessity over 800 years ago in Pre-Columbian Latin America. Arriving in the Yucatan 200 years before the Spanish conquest, the hammock was the primary sleep apparatus for adults and children alike. So ever present was the hammock that people of all economic and cultural status was known to sleep in hammocks. Soon finding a place in European culture through Spanish explorers, hammocks today are used as a modern relaxation device throughout the world.
The Mayans knew the hammock was an ideal sleep system for infants. The secure design wraps around the baby simulating the experience in the womb and the rhythmic swaying comforts and calms infants. While the materials have evolved from twines to cotton and synthetic materials throughout the years, the baby hammock has proven to provide relief for colic, reflux, and restless sleepers. Baby hammocks are also known to provide health benefits for premature babies and reduce the risk of smothering and SIDS by ensuring baby sleeps on his or her back as doctors recommend in the first critical year.
About the Founders of hushamok™
Mark and Julie Soboil founded Hushamok in 2006 after the birth of their first child, when a friend recommended a traditional baby hammock. The baby hammock worked wonders in soothing their restless and unsettled baby.
As much as they loved the concept of this 1000-year-old invention they felt it needed updating to meet the demands of today’s natural parent.
With Mark and Julie’s backgrounds in Environmental Science and interest in using eco-friendly and organic materials their journey to design modern nursery furniture began. A year later Hushamok began selling its inaugural product, the Hushamok baby hammock.
The couple is immensely proud of their creations as well as their committed team of designers that offer eco-friendly and beautiful nursery baby furniture.
The couple resides in Devonport New Zealand with their 2 boys Lucas and Leo.
